Boasting three locations – Jalan Song, The Spring Mall and Kuching Airport in Sarawak – is John’s Pies. Whenever you walk by its outlet, you are sure to be greeted with the mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked pies. From savory and sweet pies to pastas, pastries and sandwiches, there will be one to satisfy your tummies.

The owner, John Sim, started this business back in 2010 from a small room in his house. Through his travels, he always found pies to be a source of comfort food that can be done in so many different ways. This was his inspiration to start a pie business to bring the same comfort he experienced with pies to Kuching.”

John admitted that the first 2 years of the business wasn’t all smooth sailing to the point where he almost gave up. He shared that back then, people were not familiar with the concept of western pies. Instead, they rather enjoy local snacks and dishes such as siew pau and kolo mee. Wanting to make this business work, he decided to give it one last shot by having a stall at the Rainforest World Music Festival. Needless to say, the festival gave John and his business the much needed spark to achieve the success he has today. From selling 60-70 pies on average daily, to over 2000 pies per day at the festival, it was testament that there is indeed a market for pies. Another blessing he encountered was that social media started to boom during that time and he received promotional support from foodies who tried out his pies.

When asked about his best selling pies, John shared there are four – smoked chicken, chicken cheese, beef cheese and signature steak. Another well-loved pie by his customers is the lamb pie. A unique item of the menu that is definitely worth a try is the Sarawak Chicken Laksa pie which pays homage to the famous Sarawak Laksa.

During the MCO last year, John shared that Boost assisted him in many ways to shift his business from a conventional structure to online.

“Digital payment platforms like Boost, are such incredible creations for entrepreneurs like me in managing our business’ daily operations. To my business, at John’s Pie, adoption of Boost not only saves time, but also attracts more customers, reduces the risk of theft, and makes it convenient to collect sales data. Boost played a significant role in my business and lets me offer a better customer experience,” said John.

During the MCO where F&B outlets were only allowed to operate takeaway and delivery, customer preferences shifted to frozen pies, which he ships to cities all over Sarawak. John said that he also noticed that with everyone moving to a digital lifestyle, his customers were putting in orders beyond business hours at late night or wee hours in the morning. He too had to adapt and leveraged the Boost Business Payment Link which allows merchants to send a URL payment link to the customer via any messaging app to conveniently make payments online.

“With the payment link, customers just need to tap on their smartphone to pay which helped spur our online delivery orders, enabling us to carry on without hassle. Simply put, Boost makes transactions easy for customers and improves my business operations simultaneously,” he continued.

For customers in Peninsular Malaysia who would like to try John’s Pies, you can do so as he ships his frozen pies over through air cargo.
